The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to introduce one of its most iconic villains to the big screen, with Robert Downey Jr. cast as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film 'Avengers: Doomsday'. The announcement was made by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who also confirmed that the Russo brothers, who directed 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame', will return to helm the new film.
Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom is a surprising one, given that the actor has become synonymous with the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark in the MCU. However, Feige said that the actor's "incredible range and charisma" made him the perfect choice to play the complex and enigmatic villain.
"Doctor Doom is one of the most iconic and powerful villains in the Marvel Universe," Feige said in a statement. "He's a brilliant scientist, a master sorcerer, and a ruthless dictator. We needed an actor who could bring all of those qualities to life, and Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect choice."
'Avengers: Doomsday' is scheduled to be released in 2024. The film will also feature the return of other MCU favorites, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk.
