Competition Overview
The UEFA Europa League is a club football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It is the second-tier club competition in European football, after the UEFA Champions League.
The competition was founded in 1971 as the UEFA Cup. It was renamed the UEFA Europa League in 2009.
Format
The UEFA Europa League is contested by 32 teams. The teams are divided into eight groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout phase.
The knockout phase consists of 16 teams. The teams are seeded based on their performance in the group stage. The draw for the knockout phase is held in February.
The final is played in May. The winner of the UEFA Europa League qualifies for the following season's UEFA Champions League.
