Supreme Court Strikes Down Bump Stock Ban

Landmark Ruling Overturns Trump-Era Regulation

What are Bump Stocks?

Bump stocks are gun stocks that allow a semi-automatic rifle to fire shots in rapid succession, simulating the effect of fully automatic fire. The device uses the recoil of the firearm to rapidly push the trigger forward, allowing the shooter to fire multiple rounds without having to manually pull the trigger after each shot.

Trump-Era Ban

In 2018, the Trump administration implemented a ban on bump stocks following the mass shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead. The ban was challenged in court by gun rights advocates who argued it violated the Second Amendment.

Supreme Court Ruling

On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to strike down the bump stock ban. The majority opinion, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, found that the ban exceeded the government's authority under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution.

Implications of the Ruling

The Supreme Court's ruling is a major victory for gun rights advocates and could have significant implications for gun control policy. The decision could make it more difficult for future administrations to regulate bump stocks or similar devices.
